ASTRO 2005 Introduction Promises Superior Capability for Increasing
Extracranial Applications
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Accuray announced The
California Cancer Center in Fresno, the first site to install the CyberKnife
G4 System, has successfully performed 25 treatments in the systems first
month of operation at the Center. Taking advantage of next generation
CyberKnifes ability to treat extracranial as well as intracranial tumors, the
California Cancer Center has used the CyberKnife to treat patients with lung,
spine and brain lesions.
"We are fortunate to be the first site to work with this new platform, and
the systems performance during our first 25 treatments has been impressive,"
says Dr. Douglas S. Wong, Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at the
California Cancer Center. "It is fitting that our initial CyberKnife
treatments have benefited patients with spine and lung lesions that could not
have been treated with our previous frame-based system."
With the percentage of treatments for extracranial indications in the
United States surpassing 50% during the three month period ending September
30, 2005, access to this advanced technology is more critical than ever
before. CyberKnife is meeting this demand with more than 122 systems installed
or under contract to be installed at customer sites worldwide. At the heart of
this widespread acceptance is the CyberKnifes demonstrated ability to
complement a physicians practice by generating new referrals for treatment.
"We are extremely excited about the positive reception this
next-generation platform has generated from our customers," says
Eric Lindquist, Chief Marketing Officer at Accuray. "The ability to treat
tumors throughout the body with sub-millimeter accuracy establishes CyberKnife
as the leader in robotic radiosurgery."
An estimated 1,000 attendees witnessed the unveiling of the new CyberKnife
G4 platform on the ASTRO exhibit floor. This tremendous interest was also
reflected in the significant rise in daily lead generation, which increased by
85% over the previous year.
About the CyberKnife System
The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System is the worlds only
radiosurgery system that utilizes intelligent robotics. This enables the
CyberKnife to ablate tumors anywhere in the body with sub-millimeter accuracy.
The CyberKnife System treats patients in single or staged (typically 2-5)
sessions by delivering multiple beams of precisely directed radiation that
converge upon the tumor while minimizing injury to surrounding healthy tissue.
The CyberKnife uses a combination of image guidance and computer controlled
robotics to continuously track, detect and correct for tumor and patient
movements throughout the treatment with pinpoint accuracy. Because of the
extreme precision and accuracy of the CyberKnife, no head or body frame is
required. CyberKnife has proven to attract a new patient population to a
physicians practice and complements existing radiation therapy, IMRT or IGRT
programs. With over 120 systems sold and a large body of peer-reviewed
publications supporting its clinical practice, the CyberKnife has treated over
16,000 patients worldwide.
