Tiburcio Caregivers Wage One Day Strike at Health Clinic; Demand Health
Insurance Coverage for Children of Employees and a Living Wage
HAYWARD, Calif., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- On Tuesday, December 20, over a
hundred caregivers will wage a one-day strike at two Tiburcio Vasquez Health
Center facilities in Hayward and Union City. The caregivers, some of whom work
as medical assistants, licensed vocational nurses, and mental health workers,
have been bargaining since June 2005 for a living wage and health care
coverage for dependants. Tiburcio Vasquez caregivers are currently offered no
health insurance benefits for their children and dependant family members.
"I cannot pay the full cost for my childrens health insurance -- that is
what your employer is supposed to help out with. But Tiburcio Vasquez wont
pay a dime," said Meliza Shaw, a Medical Assistant at Tiburcio Vasquez, who
earns a little over $10 an hour. "I have a nine year old child and a ten year
old who need health care. They have to get it from somewhere, so I had to
enroll them in the state program, Healthy Families. Now the taxpayers are
paying."
Caregivers will also be protesting Tiburcio Vasquez managements failure
to pay overtime. Last Friday, attorneys for SEIU UHW filed a legal complaint
against Tiburcio Vasquez for violations of state wage and hour laws.
