DEERFIELD, Ill., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Walgreen Co. (NYSE, Nasdaq: WAG) had December sales of $4,481,570,000, an increase of 10.3 percent from $4,063,056,000 for the same month in 2004. Sales in comparable stores (those open at least a year) rose 6.2 percent. December pharmacy sales increased 10.4 percent, while comparable pharmacy sales increased 7.0 percent. Prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased 4.1 percent. Pharmacy sales accounted for 56.1 percent of total sales for the month. Calendar year-to-date sales were $43,631,437,000, an increase of 11.9 percent from $38,997,741,000 in 2004. Fiscal year-to-date sales for the four months were $15,381,968,000, up 10.2 percent from $13,952,162,000. Comparable store sales for the fiscal year to date increased 6.9 percent. Comparable store front-end sales increased 5.1 percent during December. Walgreens opened seven stores during December, acquired three stores and closed one. At Dec. 31 the company operated 5,080 stores in 45 states and Puerto Rico, versus 4,714 stores a year ago. Store counts now include 36 home care division locations this year and 31 last year, but exclude 19 stores closed due to Hurricane Katrina.
