SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Three newspapers
acquired at the end of August are included in the November 2005 numbers, but
not in the 2004 numbers. Results for Detroit and Tallahassee, which were sold
in the third quarter, have been excluded from all periods.
For the month, total advertising revenue was up 3.6%. Retail was up 5.9%,
national was down 13.8% and classified was up 10.3%. Help wanted was up 28.6%,
real estate was up 18.7% and auto was down 11.5%.
On a pro forma basis, that is, as if the three newspapers acquired in
August had been with the company in 2004 as well, total advertising revenue
for November was up 0.4%. Retail was up 2.5%; national was down 14.4% and
classified was up 5.6%. Help wanted was up 23.7%, real estate was up 13.0%
and auto was down 14.5%.
Knight Ridder Chairman and CEO Tony Ridder said, "A solid showing in
retail, along with very strong help wanted and real estate, put November in
the plus column -- and about in the middle of the pack vis-a-vis peer
companies. Soft national, exacerbated especially by the absence of
approximately $1 million in state treasury advertising that we had in
Philadelphia the same period a year ago, held down the overall number. That
said, we continue to be comfortable with the consensus for the quarter."
The remaining numbers reported are GAAP. Total operating revenue was up
3.6% for the month and up 2.1% for the year.
Total ad revenue for the month was up 12.5% in San Jose, 8.3% in St. Paul,
4.2% in Miami, 3.9% in Fort Worth and 2.0% in Contra Costa. Philadelphia,
Charlotte and Kansas City were soft.
Retail was up 25.0% in San Jose, 11.1% in Miami, 6.6% in Fort Worth and
4.4% in St. Paul. The other large markets were soft.
National was up 14.5% in St. Paul. The other large markets were soft.
Classified was a bright spot, up 17.2% in Contra Costa, 11.1% in St. Paul,
6.8% in Fort Worth, 6.0% in San Jose, 6.0% in Kansas City, 5.6% in Miami and
2.7% in Philadelphia. Charlotte was soft.
Other revenue was up 10.8%, due primarily to book publishing revenue and
specialized publication revenue.
Circulation revenue was up 2.5% for the month, but would have been down
1.0% if the three acquired newspapers were included in both periods.
Certain statements contained in this report are forward-looking. They are
based on managements current knowledge of factors affecting Knight Ridders
business. Actual results could differ materially from those currently
anticipated, depending upon -- but not limited to -- the effects of interest
rates, of national and local economies on revenue, of the evolution of the
Internet, of unforeseen changes in the price of newsprint and of negotiations
and relations with labor unions.
