Event to Take Place Sunday, December 25 at 5:30 PM NEW YORK, Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Worlds Largest Chanukah Menorah will be lighted on Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, near Central Park, between the Plaza and the Pierre Hotels. The first candle will be lighted on Sunday, December 25, at 5:30 PM. Menorah lighting will follow on all evenings of Chanukah at 5:30 PM (Friday at about 3:45 PM; Saturday night at 8:30 PM). The Worlds Largest Chanukah Menorah, sponsored by the Lubavitch Youth Organization, was specially designed by world-renowned artist Yaacov Agam. Mr. Agams design was inspired by a hand drawing by the Rambam (Maimonides) of the original Menorah in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The Menorah stands as a symbol of freedom and democracy for all of mankind, said Rabbi Shmuel M. Butman, Director, Lubavitch Youth Organization. It celebrates good over evil, democracy over terrorism, light over darkness, freedom over oppression. The 32-foot high, gold colored, 4,800-pound steel structure will be lighted nightly with genuine oil lamps. Specially designed glass chimneys will protect the Chanukah lights from the Central Park winds. Due to the height of the Menorah, it will be lighted nightly with the help of a Con Edison "cherry-picker" crane that will lift the lighters to the Menorah Heights. "May the Chanukah lights usher in the eternal lights of the great redemption and a new world of peace and tranquility, happiness and harmony between man and man and between nation and nation," said Rabbi Butman. HOT CHANUKAH LATKES SUNDAY, JANUARY 1 On Sunday evening, January 1, after lighting the full Menorah, there will be live music, joyful singing and dancing. Hot potato pancakes, the traditional food of Chanukah, will be distributed to everyone. There will also be special gifts for children. In these difficult times when the forces of darkness seem so strong, we must respond with an extra measure of light. We invite you to join us and give strength to the Menorahs universal message of light over darkness, freedom over oppression, and help bring light and inspiration into the lives of millions of people all over the world. 100-VEHICLE MENORAH PARADE SATURDAY EVENING DECEMBER 31 In honor of The Festival of Lights, the Mitzvah Tank Organization of the Lubavitch Youth Organization will organize a Grand Menorah Parade on Saturday evening, December 31. A motorcade of about 100 vehicles, including 30 Mitzvah Tanks and 70 Menorah vehicles will spread the joy and festivity of the holiday throughout the New York Metropolitan area. The Menorah Parade will start at 6:30 PM from Kingston Avenue and President Street, two blocks from Lubavitch World Headquarters on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn.
