WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- First Baptist Church of Washington will offer a leadership series, "Faith and the Media" from 7 to 8 p.m. each Wednesday in February in its sanctuary at 1328 16th St. NW. Top journalists, leaders and influencers will share useful information, insights and experiences about todays intersection of faith and news. The four-week series will examine how news stories involving faith are approached and why religion is increasingly becoming part of traditionally secular stories. Other questions to be discussed are how reporters and leaders can ensure faith is reported on fairly and how leaders can talk about faith effectively and responsibly. On Feb. 1, journalists Jody Hassett, formerly with ABC World News; Alan Cooperman of The Washington Post; John DeDakis of CNN; and Rob Marus of the Associated Baptist Press will discuss "Christianity and the Media." On Feb. 8, the topic is "Radical Islam and the Media," featuring Dr. Paul Marshall, senior fellow at Freedom House, Americas oldest human rights organization. On Feb. 15, Melissa Rogers, former executive director of the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life; Dr. Stanley Carlson-Thies, formerly of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives; Eric Sapp, former aide to Rep. David Price (D-NC); and everyday American Todd Elliott will discuss "Talking about Faith with the Media." On Feb. 22, Wesley Pippert, director of the Missouri School of Journalisms Washington Program and former United Press International correspondent, will speak about "Faith, Media and Leaders." "We became interested in this topic when we learned that our city is home to more than 15,000 media outlets," FBC Pastor James G. Somerville said. "We also recognize that many leading newsmakers work in Washington. We wanted to offer a valuable forum about a timely, important topic for these audiences." The audience may ask questions during each program and meet speakers at a reception following. Anyone interested is invited to visit http://www.firstbaptistdc.org, or make reservations by e-mailing faith&media@firstbaptistdc.org or calling (202) 387-2206 ext. 5.
