Texas Restaurants Announce Support of Balanced, Active Lifestyles With In-Store Nutrition Education Materials HOUSTON, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Beginning today, over 1,000 Texas McDonalds locations will distribute informational trayliners in support of the Texas Department of Agricultures Square Meals program and the USDAs revised food pyramid. In addition, McDonalds will distribute coupon rewards for free packages of sliced apples as Square Meals program rewards in kits sent to over 1,500 Texas 4th grade classrooms. Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs announced today that the Square Meals program incentive kits are being sent to over 1,500 schools across the state to encourage balanced eating, choosing healthier food choices and activity lifestyles amongst Texas families. A coupon for a free package of McDonalds Apple Dippers will be included in every incentive kit sent to these schools across the state. Each package of Apple Dippers provides 1 full serving of fresh fruit. Apple Dippers are one of three fresh fruit-based menu items offered to customers in restaurants throughout Texas. McDonalds Fruit n Walnut Salad, Fruit n Yogurt Parfait and Apple Dippers provide customers additional menu items they can utilize to fit into their balanced lifestyle. "Its easy to fit McDonalds menu options into a balanced diet," said Edgardo Navarro, Vice President of Quality, Service and Cleanliness, with McDonalds. "From our salads, to our Happy Meal choices, to our Premium Chicken sandwiches -- we have great options for everyone. Parents and kids selecting Happy Meals can choose low fat white or chocolate milk or apple juice instead of soft drinks, or Apple Dippers instead of fries. Kids view chocolate milk and Apple Dippers as treats, but Moms see them as a welcomed alternative to fries and soda." A sample selection of fruit, vegetable and dairy items available at McDonalds follow: Milk Jugs and Apple Juice Available in both low-fat white and chocolate, the milk jugs are one easy way to make a Happy Meal. Both contain eight ounces of one percent milk, and are an excellent source of Calcium and Vitamin D and a good source of Vitamin A. Minute Maid Apple Juice is 100% pure apple juice, an excellent source of Vitamin C and a good source of Calcium. Apple Dippers The Apple Dippers are a fresh, anytime snack of sliced apples served in a convenient go-anywhere bag and accompanied with a delicious caramel dip containing only one gram of fat. Apple Dippers provide an easy way for adults and children to consume one serving of the recommended daily intake of fruit. Premium Salads McDonalds Premium Salads provide a tasty way to get the fruit and vegetable servings recommended by the USDA while on-the-go. While each Premium Salad provides 1 1/2 servings of vegetables, each Fruit-n-Walnut Salad provides 1 1/2 servings of the USDAs recommended daily fruit intake and is served with low-fat yogurt.
